When it comes to planning a holiday that suits everyone, finding the right place to stay is key. Wanaka, with its stunning landscapes and welcoming atmosphere, offers a perfect backdrop for families and groups looking to unwind and explore. I’ve discovered that choosing the right accommodation can make all the difference in creating lasting memories. Let me take you through some of the best family-friendly holiday stays in Wanaka, where comfort meets convenience and every detail is designed with your loved ones in mind.

Why Choose Family-Friendly Holiday Stays in Wanaka?

Wanaka is a gem nestled in New Zealand’s South Island, known for its crystal-clear lake, majestic mountains, and endless outdoor activities. But beyond the natural beauty, it’s the family-friendly holiday stays that truly enhance the experience. These accommodations offer spacious living areas, safe environments, and thoughtful amenities that cater to all ages.

Families appreciate having a home away from home. Imagine waking up to breathtaking mountain views, enjoying breakfast together in a fully equipped kitchen, and then heading out for a day of adventure. Whether it’s skiing in winter, hiking in summer, or simply relaxing by the lake, these stays provide a comfortable base to return to.

Many properties also welcome pets, so your furry family members can join the fun. This inclusivity adds an extra layer of joy and convenience, especially for those who don’t want to leave their pets behind.

Features That Make Family-Friendly Holiday Stays Stand Out

When searching for the perfect holiday rental, certain features make a big difference. Here’s what I look for and recommend when booking family-friendly accommodation in Wanaka:

  • Space to Spread Out: Multiple bedrooms and open-plan living areas allow everyone to have their own space. Kids can play freely while adults relax.

  • Fully Equipped Kitchen: Preparing meals is easier when the kitchen has modern appliances, plenty of utensils, and a dining area that fits the whole family.

  • Outdoor Areas: Safe gardens, decks, or patios where children can play and adults can unwind with a coffee or a glass of wine.

  • Entertainment Options: Board games, books, and sometimes even toys or DVDs help keep younger guests entertained during downtime.

  • Laundry Facilities: Essential for longer stays or after outdoor adventures, making packing lighter and more practical.

  • Proximity to Attractions: Being close to Wanaka’s highlights like the lakefront, walking trails, and family-friendly cafes means less time driving and more time enjoying.

These features combine to create a welcoming environment where families can relax and reconnect.

Finding the Perfect Wanaka Holiday Rentals for Your Family

Booking the right place can feel overwhelming, but focusing on your family’s needs helps narrow down the options. I always start by considering the size of the group and any special requirements, such as pet-friendly policies or accessibility features.

Wanaka offers a variety of holiday rentals, from cosy cottages to luxury homes with stunning views. For families, I recommend looking for properties that offer:

  1. Multiple Bathrooms - Avoid morning queues and keep everyone happy.

  2. Safe Outdoor Spaces - Fenced yards or gardens where kids can play safely.

  3. Comfortable Bedding - Quality mattresses and plenty of bedding options for a good night’s sleep.

  4. Heating and Cooling - Wanaka’s weather can change quickly, so climate control is a must.

  5. Easy Access to Essentials - Supermarkets, pharmacies, and medical centres nearby for peace of mind.

One of my favourite ways to find these rentals is through trusted local providers who understand the unique needs of families. For example there are the big platforms like Airbnb, VRBO and Booking.com.

However if you want to avoid paying commission or a service fee, it pays to search for properties that take direct bookings. Some of the property management companies will also take direct bookings.

It can be difficult to search these properties since that large platforms dominate google search. But it can be done, if you see a property you like and it has a name, do a direct search on that name and see if an official website is available. This is a great way to save money on accommodation. For example: ValleyView-

Wanaka is on the large booking platforms, but a google search of the name will take you to the official website. Check that the site has the ValleyView logo, as there are many imposters.

Activities and Attractions That Complement Family-Friendly Stays

Staying in a family-friendly rental is just the start. Wanaka is packed with activities that appeal to all ages and interests. Here are some highlights that make the region so special:

  • Lake Wanaka: Perfect for swimming, kayaking, or simply picnicking by the water. The calm lake is safe for children and offers plenty of space to explore.

  • Mount Iron Track: A family-friendly hike with rewarding views at the summit. It’s manageable for kids and a great way to introduce them to New Zealand’s outdoors.

  • Puzzling World: A quirky attraction featuring illusion rooms and mazes that delight children and adults alike.

  • Wanaka Lavender Farm: A peaceful spot to wander, take photos, and enjoy the scent of fresh lavender.

  • Local Cafes and Resturants: Many cafes in Wanaka are welcoming to families, offering kids’ menus and relaxed atmospheres. Weekend markets provide fresh produce and local crafts.

  • Wineries & Breweries: Wanaka has eight wineries, four craft breweries and the Cardrona Distillery. Beer enthusiasts and wine lovers can explore to their hearts content.

These activities are easily accessible from most family-friendly holiday stays, making it simple to plan your days without long drives or complicated logistics.

Tips for a Smooth and Enjoyable Family Holiday in Wanaka

To make the most of your time in Wanaka, here are some practical tips I’ve gathered from experience:

  • Book Early: Family-friendly rentals are popular, especially during school holidays and peak seasons. Secure your accommodation well in advance.

  • Pack Smart: Bring layers for changing weather, swimwear, and outdoor gear. Don’t forget essentials for kids like sunscreen, hats, and snacks.

  • Plan Flexible Days: Allow time for rest and spontaneous adventures. Sometimes the best memories come from unplanned moments.

  • Read the Listing Details: Whether you are booking on one of the big platforms or directly with the owners, take the time to read the listing details. Does the property supply shampoo, is there wifi, where can you park? These are things you need to know.

  • Holiday Homes are not Uniform: Therefore it is important to know what amenities are supplied before booking. If in doubt contact the property and ask a question. Do not assume! I once got caught out with a house full of teenagers and no wifi because I had failed to check! (needless to say, I will not make that mistake again)

  • Check out the Location: If you do not want to drive you will need to book somewhere within walking distance to shops etc. If you have a vehicle then you will be fine, apart from at very peak times, when traffic can be heavy, Wanaka is still a small town and you usually can get to most destinations within a few minutes.

  • Communicate Needs: When booking, let your host know about any special requirements or celebrations. Many hosts are happy to help make your stay extra special.

  • Respect the Property: Treat your rental with care. This ensures a positive experience for you and future guests.

By keeping these tips in mind, your family holiday in Wanaka will be smooth, enjoyable, and full of wonderful experiences.
